Math Extension with Pattern Block Puzzles
Miss Owl explains!
Have I told you I have been helping mom with math lately? She was thinking I had to use the pattern blocks only with the outlines in my puzzles. So I humored her for a while and matched things in the lines. You know, moms like that.
On this puzzle, there were 4 triangles, two diamonds, a trapezoid, and a hexagon. That will mean 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 +1/3 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1 = 2 & 5/6, follow me? At least it will mean that when I am older. And do not believe the saying on my dress, my aunt gave me that. I really will like school, at least I think so!
Now, where was I? Oh, yeah. I showed my mom a good trick. Kids do not like only matching puzzle pieces in the lines. You were a kid once, too, so you know!
Here I am putting pieces in a puzzle my own way. The total will still be the same, but I am an original. I’m going to finish this up with two more triangles as I like triangles! That will be six triangles, one diamond, one trapezoid, and a hexagon. So this will be 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1 = 2 & 5/6 again.
When I am in school and get worksheets, I might show my teacher this neat trick with puzzles. And, do you like my band aids? Yeah, mom was on the phone just long enough for me to empty the band-aid container. Pretty, isn’t it?
So then we relaxed with some Yoga. Math takes hard thinking. I like to think! Thinking helps me keep my mom smart.
Like the puzzles? Melissa and Doug made those. I like animals.
See you next time I teach my mom something!
Thank you for reading.
I have to tell my mom a bedtime story now. It is her bedtime.
Thank you for reading.

Do you know about HELLP Syndrome?
No, that is not a misspelling. HELLP is thought to be a variant of pre-eclampsia, although it may be entirely different. As teachers, we get students with a varied set of background experiences and health conditions. We need to be aware of the issues some families have and may have experienced. I have experienced this syndrome personally as I had HELLP Syndrome and a birthing emergency.

Recipe Cari boucane from Reunion Island
I recently had the pleasure of cooking a traditional meal from the French Reunion Island for some people who have never visited the island. Saffron, thyme, tomato, potato, white rice, garlic, onion, and bacon prepared in the traditional way made a lovely meal and cultural experience for them. It was delicious! I used the recipe I remember from living there.
